A very taboo subject in many areas, but it should not be!!

Domestic abuse and violenceDomestic abuse, also called “domestic violence” or “intimate partner violence”, can be defined as a pattern of behaviour in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. 

Some signs of physical abuse:

  1. Black eyes
  2. Bruises on the arms
  3. Busted lips
  4. Red or purple marks on the neck

Some signs of emotional abuse:

  1. Employee never talks about their relationship
  2. They blame themselves for anything
  3. Employees seems very insecure now
  4. Employee gets an unusual amount of messages/calls

How to get them help:

  • Women can call The Freephone National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge on 0808 2000 247 for free at any time, day or night. The staff will offer confidential, non-judgemental information and support
  • Talk to a doctor, health visitor or midwife
  • Men can call Men’s Advice Line on 0808 8010 327 (Monday and Wednesday, 9am to 8pm, and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9am to 5pm) for non-judgemental information and support
