This document is the back bone of your Health & Safety documents.
This is the document that confirms all the necessary procedures for running your business.
It comes in 3 parts:
The arrangements
...what procedures are in place and how to do them
The responsibilities
...who does what
Policy statement
...confirming the Directors responsibilities for staff, clients and visitors
For the 'arrangements' this can include the following headings:
Asbestos, accident reporting, hand tools, fire, training, working at height, confined spaces, working alone, young persons, plant, machinery, maintenance checks, electrical equipment etc.
For the 'responsibilities' this is the document that states who is going to do what.
What I tend to find is the policy is very generic for the business and doesn’t really explain what the arrangements are – so what really needs to be done.
Some companies come to me and ask me to review and I usually end up halving the document to make it relevant and specific for that business. Plus the fact the staff need to read and understand the contents and if it is hundreds of pages long they will not read it.
I also suggest to my clients to get all staff to read and confirm understanding. This is for both the employee and the employer to confirm they understand what is required and how to do this.
A downloadable version with instructions so you can make it specific to your business is available to purchase from my online shop
