COSHH Assessment

Course duration: 2 hours

COSHH Assessments

“I would like to thank you very much for delivering a very good training course for my staff on Health & Safety. It was very relevant to our industry and explained in a way that everybody understood.”

Amanda Eyre, Director - A&H Associates Ltd, Essex.

What’s involved in the COSHH Assessment process?

There are eight steps involved in the COSHH Assessment process:

  • Step 1 - Assess the risks
We will assess the risks to health from hazardous substances used in or created by the workplace activities.
  • Step 2 - Decide what precautions are needed
We will ensure employees do not carry out work which could expose anyone to hazardous substances without first considering the risks and the necessary precautions, and what else they need to do to comply with COSHH.
  • Step 3 - Prevent or adequately control exposure
We will work with organisations and businesses to ensure your employees are prevented from being exposed to hazardous substances. Where preventing exposure is not reasonably practicable, then we will support the organisation or business to ensure employees know how to adequately control it.
  • Step 4 - Ensure that control measures are used and maintained
We will ensure that control measures are used and maintained properly and that safety procedures are followed.
  • Step 5 - Monitor the exposure
We will monitor the exposure of employees to hazardous substances.
  • Step 6 - Carry out appropriate health surveillance
We will carry out appropriate health surveillance where your assessment has shown this is necessary or where COSHH sets specific requirements.
  • Step 7 - Prepare plans and procedures to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies
We will prepare plans and procedures to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies involving hazardous substances.
  • Step 8 - Ensure employees are properly informed, trained and supervised
We will work with organisations and businesses to ensure they are able to provide their employees with suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training.

Who else is covered by the assessment?

Although the eight steps only refer to “employees”, the regulations also cover anyone who works in the premises, for example, students, members of the public and contractors.

How do we help you and your business?

We work with organisations and businesses to ensure their COSHH Assessments address the needs of both the employee and non-employee population, to the required standard, as laid out in the regulations.
